First residents move in at The Banks

It’s not every day that new residents to Cincinnati are welcomed by the mayor, the Reds and local business owners.

But Tuesday morning, that was the welcoming committee that gathered to greet Jeff Reinecke and Kate Heekin, the first residents to move into an apartment at Current at The Banks.

In spite of the grey skies and non-stop rain, the couple began moving Tuesday from East Walnut Hills into their one bedroom apartment directly across from the Reds stadium.

“It’s sunny in my mind,” said Reinecke, 32, who recently moved to Cincinnati from Arlington, Va. “We looked at a lot of places downtown, but nothing was quite like this. It’s new, and to me, it’s going to force everyone else to step up their game a little bit.”

Already, 60 percent of The Banks first 300 apartments have been leased, with residents lined up to move in over the next several months, say officials with Atlanta-based Carter and The Dawson Co., the project’s developer.

Apartments at Current at The Banks are divided between two buildings on each side of the newly built Freedom Way, between Joe Nuxhall Way and Walnut Street. They include a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units up to 1,300 square feet. Community perks include outdoor terraces, a fitness center, pool and outdoor kitchen area. Apartment amenities include granite counter tops, ceramic tile flooring, stainless refrigerators and walk-in closets. Rents begin around $800 a month to more than $2,300 a month – with the pricier units home to the roomier floor plans and best views of Great American Ball Park and the Ohio River.

Beneath the apartments are more than 80,000 square feet of retail, that developers are mostly filling with restaurants, including the recently opened bar and restaurant Holy Grail.

“We’re going to have all the new restaurants and night life down below—it’s going to be really fun,” says Heekin, 25, who is originally from Montgomery. “We’ve been hearing about this for years. When the building actually came out of the ground, that’s when we really put into perspective that it would be option for us. It’s very exciting.”
