Cincinnati ranked in top 10 for U.S. emerging cities

CINCINNATI - Downtown Cincinnati is growing, and so is national recognition for its redevelopment.

Forbes.com released a list of the top 16 U.S. cities growing and investing to bring residential units and businesses back to their urban cores.

Ranked at number 8 on the list, Cincinnati joins the company of cities such as number 1 ranked Denver, number 6 ranked Louisville, Ky., number 14 Cleveland and number 16 New York, N.Y. for growing significantly over the last decade.
Forbes cites an uptick of young professionals, ages 25 to 34, seeking downtown living near work and nightspots as fuel for the revitalization of each of the cities’ population booms on the list.

Specifically, Forbes cites statistics from Downtown Cincinnati Inc. showing population increases of 12 percent downtown in 2011 compared to a year earlier.

“The cities that capture the mobile, college-educated ‘young and restless’ are the ones who are most likely to revitalize their downtowns and accelerate economic progress in their cities,” said Lee Fisher, president of CEOs for Cities, a national not-for-profit organization that helps cities map out economic growth.

Forbes, and Downtown Cincinnati Inc., credit much of the growth to projects seeded in the 1990s with $1.3 billion invested in construction. Some is completed, others still planned.

Specifically mentioned are the Banks mixed use development and stadiums, Smale Park that is still under construction, Horseshoe Casino that opened in early March, the streetcar project, and the redevelopment of Over-the-Rhine.
