Several Ohio MSAs moved up in an annual ranking of 200 major metropolitan areas’ job market and technology muscle, compiled by the Milken Institute.
In its annual gauge of job growth, wage conditions and technological output, California-based Milken ranked the CIncinnati-Middletown area 138th out of 200 major metros. That’s up from 173 last year.
While Cincinnati’s job growth was down 2.6 percent over the past year, it ranked 66th for GDP growth from 2003-08.
Columbus was the highest-placing Ohio city at 108, up from 135 in 2008. Other metro areas that moved up include Akron, to 167 from 172; Dayton, to 183 from 189; and Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, to 186 from 193.
The best-performing metro area in the nation in the latest report was the Austin, Texas, which hit the top spot after a 4th-place finish last year. Texas’ Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area came in second, followed by Salt Lake City. Texas metros made up nine of the top 20 strongest markets Milken ranked.
